Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, with almost 40% of the state's population living in the city area. The city contains the
Alaska Native Heritage Center, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, and international events such as an annual ice-carving
festival. Winters are considered moderately mild by Alaska standards, though annual snowfall still exceeds 70 inches (178cm).
The city's location as equidistant from New York, Tokyo, and many parts of Russia have made it a valuable refueling stop for aircraft, and its port is also the busiest in the state. Other industry revolves around the state's natural resources and tourism.
